Madhubala! One of the great actresses of Hindi film history, The Most Beautiful Woman, with the most ridiculously dramatic and tragic life story. Appropriately for someone so full of love and so loved, her birthday is Valentine’s Day. And so I thought it would finally be time to do a Hindi Film 101 of her life.

Tuesday Tamil: Minsara Kanavu, Justifiably Beloved
I finally watched it! After feeling vaguely like I had watched it for years, and then realizing I had only seen the songs a bunch of times and read the plot summary. And it was just as delightful and lovable and wonderful as I had heard, and the songs were even better in context.
Box Office Youtube Video: I Complain About Screen Counts
Youtube video! Of the same post I put up already. But with my face and hand gestures and Josh poster.
Happy Fat Tuesday! Songs for Bodily Indulgences, Food and Otherwise
Happy Fat Tuesday! I just waited in line for 20 minutes to buy Pazckis and by the time I got to the front, I decided to just get a full dozen because I had earned them. This is supposed to be the day we gorge ourselves after all. And to help us all get into that mood, FOOD SONGS! And also other songs, but they are hiding under the respectable food ones.
Box Office: Padman Floods Theaters
This is an interesting week! Two movies on way more screens than I expected, and one on way less. Although the per screen total is about what I expected for all of them. (as always, figures from rentrack by way of bollywoodhungama)
Monday Malayalam: Aadhi Review (SPOILERS), Lots of Sparkle No Soul
You can probably read this review even if you haven’t seen the film. There are a few plot twists, but it is the action and chase scenes that make the film the film stand out, and reading spoilers won’t give you the sense of those. Or satisfy your curiosity about seeing Mohanlal’s son onscreen.
News Round-Up: Everyone Has Jobs, Amitabh to Anupam to Imraan!
Happy Monday! So much news to catch up on! For instance, Amitabh went to the hospital, which is always an exciting experience for the international news media. Poor Amitabh, can you imagine if every time you went in for a routine procedure, your picture was headlines everywhere in the world? So stressful!
Monday Morning Questions Post, Aiyaary Week (Finally)!
Happy Monday! I successfully finished my first week of heartworm treatment! Well, not “my” first week, the dog’s first week. But I’m the one who had to give her the pills and rub her sore legs and stuff. And now, the second week! In which if her heart rate goes up, she will DIE!!!! (or so the Vet impressed it upon me) Now, distract me from my overwhelming responsibilities by asking me questions. Oh, and answering mine, a follow up to last Monday.
Monday Malayalam: Aadhi Review (No Spoilers), Nepotism Perks and Parkour
Another Malayalam film in theaters! I braved the cold, and left the dog home alone for 8 hours, and it was kind of worth it. Not super worth it, but not horrible. If nothing else, it was nice to feel warm for 3 hours watching a movie in Kerala.
Silly Sunday: Quickie Bonus FanFics! Snowed in with SRK
My first fanfic post was very long, had no SRK, and only had one story option. All of these things have resulted in the past in a lack of interest from the readership. So to make it up I am going to do something short, with a lot of options, and lots of SRK.
Silly Sunday: International Day of Women and Girls in Science! Vidya Balan Female Scientist With Supportive Men in Her Life
My sister, who does math, just forwarded me an email reminding her to celebrate the “international day of women and girls in science”. Which I feel can best be celebrated by an epic fanfic about how hard and ultimately rewarding it can be to be a woman in science.
Padman Review (SPOILERS): Three Versions of a Story, Real and Book and Film
I already posted my “no spoilers” review, and you might want to read that instead of this one, even if you are familiar with the “real” story, because the movie takes some interesting liberties with it.
Padman Review (No Spoilers): This is the Akshay Kumar Female Hygiene Film to Watch, if You Watch Only One
I braved the snow, a huge traffic jam, and using my moviepass card for the first time (it worked! Like a little miracle) all so I could see this movie. And it wasn’t half bad! As a movie. As a “message” or as a version of the true story, it could have been improved, but as a movie it was a nice solid film.
Upcoming Movies: The Next Film of Amitabh, Rajinikanth, Ranveer, and Dhanush
Lots of first looks! Which are always kind of “how is this news?” but sometimes slightly interesting. These were slightly interesting ones.
Saturday Telugu: Anand, Which Should be Titled Rupa
What an interesting movie! Now I can see why everyone was excited about, but not surprised by, Fidaa. Clearly this director knows how to build complicated imperfect female characters and reward them with a perfect love story.
TGIF: In Honor of Yash and Roohi, BABIES!!!!!
Also in honor of my friend who’s baby is arriving any day now!!!!! Anyway, BABIES!
No New Movie Tonight, Because Of Snow. Instead, Dog Video!
This snow is really helping me get those old Hindi reviews up that I haven’t had a chance to write before, since I can’t go to the theaters to see something new, Hindi or otherwise. And I will be tucked in tonight watching Malayalam and Telugu films streaming so that I can put up reviews for those sometime this weekend, after doing Hindi reviews during the week. Essentially, my whole schedule is just upside down and backwards.
Happy Birthday Udita Goswami! A Half-Dozen Reasons I Love You!
I already did a dozen for Amrita, I’m TIRED! So only a half-dozen for Udita. Mostly songs. And one super sexy scene (see if you can guess which one!)
Happy Birthday Amrita Singh! A Dozen Reasons I Love You!
Amrita Singh! She has such a fascinating life story that I can’t resist writing about her. And it’s her birthday, so why not?
Happy Birthday Yash and Roohi!!!!!
A happy post! To balance the serious one from earlier today. And also because I looooooooooooove Yash and Roohi. Most serious and concerned babies ever!
Hindi Film 101: A History of Islamaphobia in Hindi and Western Popular Culture
This is another one of those posts that I have been considering writing for a long time, and now suddenly seems like the right time. Because, in a certain way, things are finally beginning to shift. And I want to do everything I can to help in shifting that conversation.
Dil Dhadakne Do: A Family Film
Here’s a random post. There’s a big thought provoking scary hard important post coming tomorrow morning, but I wanted one more nice film discussion post first. And Angie reminded me that I had still not written about this film.
Upcoming Movies! From Salman, Anushka Sharma, Sharman Joshi, and ADITYA ROY KAPUR!!!!
Oh boy, lots of interesting movies to talk about today! None of which are actually out there in the world yet, but that doesn’t mean we can’t talk about them
Wednesday Watching Post: What Are You Thinking and Reading and Watching This Week?
Happy Wednesday! Very happy to be almost through the week, we had a minor disaster at work which has made stress levels slightly high. But only slightly, because I have the most lowkey office ever.
Tuesday Classics: Bunty Aur Babli, Abhishek’s Best Role and a Movie Like No Other
It hurts my little alliteration loving heart, but I can’t do Tuesday Telugu this week. Because a big snow storm ruined my plan to drive out to the movie theater yesterday. So instead I am swapping in Friday Classics and, if the weather clears, I will do Telugu on Friday. Or something. Anyway, it still works because we get to have an Abhishek movie right by Abhi’s birthday!
