Wednesday Watching Post: What Are You Reading and Thinking and Watching This Week?

Happy Wednesday!  2 more days to Padmavat!  And (hopefully) one day until I get a dog.  Seriously, how hard is it to get a dog?????  They’re dogs!  They just want to be loved!!!!  LET ME HAVE ONE!!!! But, nooooooooo.  I have to fill out 5 different forms and go through an interview and on and on and on.  I am nearing the point of just driving out to the country and picking one up on the side of the road.  Anyway, what’s going on in your life?

Tuesday Tamil: Iru Kodugal, I watch a Gemini Genesan Movie!

I’m back to K. Balachander!  He is just so great.  And available on Rajshri Tamil on youtube.  And I have also now seen a Gemini Ganesan movie!  Which was super distracting, because it was kind of a little bit about his real life and I have no idea if that was on purpose or not.  Was his real life situation with multiple wives so well known that it would make sense to bring that into one of his movies?

Shahrukh at Davos: Speech and Interview, Focus on Equality and Courage

Davos videos are out!  Have been out for like a day now, but I am a baaaaaaad Shahrukh fan and just got around to watching them now.  Anyway, let’s talk!  Because I am guessing some of you have already seen them, or plan to see them. (for background on what Davos is and what it does, go to this post here)

Box Office/Hindi Film 101: Tiger Zinda Nahin, and the History of the China Box Office

Did I do that right?  Anyway, what I mean to say in the title is that the Tiger box office is finally dropping off.  And nothing else has shown up to pick up the slack, so it is yet another bleak and dreary week at the box office.  Well, except for China where Indian films reign supreme.

Monday Malayalam: Munthirivallikal Thalirkkumbol, the Artificial Divisions Between “Love” and “Marriage”

I watched this movie in a self-serving grab for views, knowing it was popular last year and therefore a lot of people would have seen it and want to discuss it.  And then, much to my surprise, I actually ended up enjoying the thing!

Trailer! Welcome to New York

Normally I try to mix these trailer posts up a little, adding in a few to compare.  But right now, there is NOTHING. Because stupid Padmavat messed up the release schedule and there is this weird gap.  All the movies that got moved to February last minute, their trailers came out months ago when they were supposed to release.  And all the movies that might otherwise be release in February have scuttled forward to March and their trailers aren’t out yet.  But this one trailer does look fun!

FilmFare: What They All Wore and What it Meant

The actual awards list went up earlier, but we all know that doesn’t matter nearly as much as what people wore!  Not even joking, in terms of people tuning in for the show, it’s all about who showed up and how big they went.  And in terms of how seriously people are taking the awards, and their careers in Hindi film, it is also about how big they went (remember in 2016 Priyanka didn’t even come?)

DCIB Best of 2017 Awards! Top TGIF, Top FanFic, and Top Editorial!!!!

The final (and most important) awards post: Awards for ME!!!!!  I am a guaranteed winner, because I am only competing against myself.  But let’s see what I won FOR!  Oh, and the most exciting news, thanks to these posts I have a good start on indexing the TGIF and FanFic posts, so look for those indexes to be going up sometime soon.

FilmFare Winners! What Does It All Mean?

Well, the FilmFare Awards happened.  We didn’t get to see it because, unlike the Oscar producers, the FilmFare people are too smart to do a live broadcast.  We’ll get to see a version that is edited down to just the good bits on whatever channel buys the satellite rights.  Which also changes a bit who might be winning these awards.

Happy March to the Polls Day!

I am not marching to the polls because DOG.  Or else I am, because the dog I wanted wasn’t available at the shelter last night (I don’t know, I am writing this from The Past).  Anyway, I wanted to mark the day somehow, the anniversary of the First Women’s March, when there is a second march reminding us all that the fight continues.

2017 Hindi Film Awards: Promotion Related, Biggest Surprise and Biggest Disappointment

I already put up the winning real life stories of 2017, now lets move on to where film and real life overlap, the promotions that try to drive people into the movies.  What films were over-promoted, leading to disappointment.  And what were under-promoted, leading to delightful surprises?  And what were just plain wrong promoted, leading to both?

TGIF: All Women in Anarkalis! For the Women’s March Anniversary Tomorrow

Also, all women in pink!  Because I want to see if I can make joyomama’s head explode in the comments (for those who don’t know, regular commentator joyomama is a fashion historian who writes about gender color preference).  Oh, and also because I’ve gotten a couple of people pushing back against the standard TGIF.  So no objectification and no men and no SRK in this one!

Friday Classics: Yuva, for the Start of Election Season

Happy day before the Women’s March to the Polls!  Which is a kick off and a reminder that it is all our responsibilities not just to vote, but also to run for office if possible.  So, the perfect week to talk about Yuva!  (yes yes, I know Aaytha Ezhuthu is better, I can’t find it, and I’ve already seen Yuva)

DDLJ Scene By Scene Part 43:”Mehndi Laga Ka Rakna” Ends and Amrish Puri Spoils Our Fun

It only took a month, but I have now finished “Mehndi Laga Ka Rakna”!  There’s really a lot in that song, much more than in the other ones.  It’s also, I think, only fully “real” song, even “Ruk Ja” feels like it has some fantasy in there, and certainly all the other songs are a mix of real and not-real. (full index of DDLJ coverage here)
